Year of Conviction
2013

L.P. was convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison after a jury trial. L.P. was arrested in New York for a murder that occurred in Texas. There is no physical evidence linking L.P. to the crime scene. L.P. claims that he was at home with his two children when the murder took place. The the only evidence linking L.P. to the murder was the testimony of a man who was at the crime scene participating in a drug deal when the murder occurred. This witness fled to Mexico after the murder occurred but returned to Texas to testify against L.P. in exchange for a promise that he would not be charged. L.P. is a Black man from Jamaica who struggles to communicate in English, and he argues that his public defenders were "underfunded, overworked, and not in a real position" to defend him.

Procedural issues

L.P. filed an appeal and his conviction was affirmed. He then filed a Petition for Discretionary Review, which was denied. He then filed a Texas State writ of habeas corpus, which the trial court denied.
